at Redeemer

“Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul! I will praise the LORD as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.”
-Psalm 146:1-2

philosophy of music

Music has always been an important part of expressing worship to God. Scripture gives us commands to sing praises to God, and it gives us the motivation to praise Him by revealing who God is and what He has done for His people.

Our music ministry serves the church body at Redeemer by facilitating the corporate worship of God through song. Each week, we use the musical gifts that God has given us to help our whole congregation remember and proclaim the glories of the gospel.

Music has the unique ability to take root in our minds and transform our thinking. For that reason, the songs we sing on Sunday should be filled with biblical truths. As our minds replay the songs throughout the week, we can meditate on those truths and glorify God every day.

MUSIC CRITERIA

Since music has such a powerful and transformative ability in our lives, we aim to be intentional with every song we choose to sing in our services. Here are the criteria we use to evaluate the music we sing on Sundays:

(1 Peter 2:9-10)
Is the gospel plainly and faithfully represented in this song?

(Psalm 146; 1 Timothy 3:16; Ephesians 5:18-20)
Is the Godhead the primary focus of this song?

(Colossians 3:16-17; Nehemiah 8:6-8)
Does this song pull primarily from the Bible as its source material? Does its theology align with our understanding of Scripture?

(1 Corinthians 14:26)
Will this song encourage, edify, exhort, and/or convict our congregation?

(1 Chronicles 25:6-7)
Does the music/instrumentation of this song highlight God's beauty, creativity, and character while still being accessible and singable for our people?

(Psalm 63:3-4)
Can our congregation sing this song with hearts and minds fixed on Christ?

(Amos 5:21-24; Leviticus 10:1-2)
Are there any theological or personal connections that could be a distraction to our congregation?

(Ephesians 4:11-13)
Will this song continue to encourage our congregation and keep them singing wholeheartedly for at least five to ten years?
